Interburns Fellowship Programme at SKMH
Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital is an accredited Interburns Training Centre (ITC) offering structured clinical fellowships in burn care. Fellows from around the world gain practical, hands-on experience in a high-volume, resource-appropriate burn service in Kathmandu, Nepal.

About the Programme
SKMH, established in 1997 through a partnership with Interplast Germany, is Nepal's leading dedicated centre for burn, plastic and reconstructive surgery. The hospital operates as a 100-bed facility with a dedicated High Dependency Burn Unit, ICU capacity, fully equipped operating theatres, and comprehensive outpatient dressing services. It manages approximately 500-550 burn patients annually.
Interburns partners with high-quality burn centres such as SKMH to provide training fellowships in burn surgery and nursing. These fellowships give participants the knowledge and skills needed to help establish or strengthen comprehensive burn services in their home countries. Fellows experience how an integrated burn service functions in a low-resource setting, covering clinical care as well as prevention, rehabilitation, nutrition, and team-based management.
Fellowships run for 1 to 6 months depending on individual learning objectives, and transfer to a second Interburns Training Centre may be possible according to training goals.
Fellowship Streams
Surgical Fellowships
For clinicians certified in plastic or general surgery, or those who have completed at least three years of general surgery training and have worked in a burn centre for a minimum of one year.
Nursing Fellowships
For nurses currently working in a burn centre or unit for a minimum of one year.
Good written and spoken English is essential for both streams. Desirable attributes include strong interpersonal skills, basic ICT knowledge, research interest, and teamwork or leadership abilities. Supervised clinical work does not require Nepal Medical Council registration - registration is needed only if the fellow wishes to perform unsupervised procedures or dressings.
What Fellows Can Expect
Hands-on exposure to acute burn management, dressings, theatre, ward care, outpatient services, emergency cases, physiotherapy, and nutrition support.
Structured weekly activities including case presentations, ward rounds, continuous medical education (CME) sessions, and multidisciplinary discussions.
Development of an educational portfolio (logbook, case studies, and record of learning activities).
Learning objectives agreed in advance between the fellow, their home supervisor, and the SKMH fellowship supervisor.
