Burned, Abandoned, and Brave: A Child’s Fight for Survival

Sujal was just five years old when his life was nearly claimed by fire. A bale of straw in the family’s cattle shed caught fire, and in a flash, Sujal was engulfed in flames. His tiny body suffered devastating burns. His parents, desperate and terrified, rushed him to a nearby hospital. But as the days passed and the cost of treatment soared, they were forced to make a heartbreaking decision: they took him home, believing there was no hope left.

But fate intervened.

By sheer chance, a member of the Sushma Koirala Memorial (SKM) Hospital team came across Sujal’s story on social media. What they saw was alarming—and deeply moving. They immediately contacted the family and arranged for Sujal to be transported to SKM Hospital.

When he arrived, Sujal was barely recognizable. Emaciated, with infected wounds crawling with maggots, his body was coated in herbal paste in a desperate attempt to soothe the pain. He was weak, silent, and on the edge of life.

But SKM’s team of doctors and nurses didn’t hesitate. They began intensive treatment immediately—multiple skin grafts, round-the-clock wound care, nutritional support, physiotherapy, and psychological counseling. Every day was a battle. Every dressing change was a test of endurance. But Sujal fought. And so did the team around him.

Today, Sujal is healing. His wounds are closing. His strength is returning. And though his rehabilitation is far from over, he faces it with quiet courage and determination.

His recovery is not just a medical triumph, but a story of partnership and global solidarity. For years, Interplast Germany e.V. has worked closely with SKM Hospital, helping to train Nepalese doctors and surgical teams in complex reconstructive procedures. Thanks to their commitment and knowledge-sharing, SKM’s medical staff now deliver world-class care with skill, confidence, and compassion.
